CITY ANNOUNCES “ARRRT IN ST. JOSEPH” PUBLIC ART EXHIBIT

(St. Joseph, Mich.)  Landlubbers in downtown St. Joseph will encounter scallywags, buried treasure and denizens of the deep next summer. The city officially unveiled the name, theme and logo of its 2012 public art exhibit, “Beached Pirates — Arrrt in St. Joseph.” The exhibit marks the city’s ninth year displaying public art downtown.

The exhibit will feature 30 or more sculptures including pirates, treasure chests, dolphins, seahorses, sea turtles and pelicans. It will also feature a pirate ship at the corner of Broad and State streets. Kickoff for the display will be May 18, with the pieces officially displayed May 19 through Oct. 1.

“A pirate theme is a natural for a beach community like ours,” said Susan Solon, City of St. Joseph communications and marketing director, “but no one had thought of it before. We can’t wait to see how much families, and especially kids, will enjoy this fun exhibit next summer.”

Area artists are invited to participate by downloading an application at www.stjosephpublicart.com and submitting it to Solon at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. The exhibit is made possible by generous sponsors, including financial support from the St. Joseph Improvement Association. SJIA’s support, contributed from the beginning, allows the city to host an above-average and highly creative art display that draws thousands each year to the city’s shops, restaurants and beaches.
